To me, from what little footage I've seen of Donal so far, it seems we're getting the Sanderson Mat, the goofy comic relief who did nothing but wisecrack his way through everything, instead of the Jordan Mat, who had an ocean of complex emotions hidden under that smoothly glib surface. I have been amazed at the number of people who have continued to write, even after the trailer, things like "If we don't see Mat let loose the badger on the village green, we riot!" even after seeing how the cast was aged up, and how that just would not work onscreen. I replied that The Wheel Weaves, Mat was re-incarnated in the show in the beginning, and in the books at the end. It seems Mat can't catch a break when it comes to character iteration, whether in the books or the show. There was a poster (one of the mods actually) who said it best in the Show sub: So many people complained about how Sanderson wrote Mat differently, so that he seemed a whole new person. Yes, it's amazing what a language coach can do, but still. Donal will need to lose some of his thick brogue, and that's not as easy as it sounds, if you have to do it in short order. I thought Barney was a Yiddish speaker, and was amazed to find out he wasn't. He even had the language thing down that Mat will need for the Old Tongue. He could just stop in his monologue and stare into space, and you wondered what was going on behind those dynamic blue-grey eyes. In those 15 minutes he went through all the colors of the spectrum except joy. Those of us who have seen Barney in Starboy disagree. There are many reasons that he could have been recast without it being a significant concern for the production. Maybe he found that living in Prague for a significant portion of the year was disrupting his personal life too much. Maybe he's suffering from sudden fame, or depression from the global pandemic. Maybe he found that his career goals were working on smaller projects rather than a decade-long high profile TV show. Maybe Barney's performance wasn't quite what they had in mind. James Rhodes (Terrence Howard => Don Cheadle), both of whom are important members of the Avengers. If you want a more primary-level character for the analogy - similarly, Marvel's Cinematic Universe has turned out pretty well despite recasting Bruce Banner (Edward Norton => Mark Ruffalo) and Col. In the end Game of Thrones had an ending that many people (myself included) considered weak and disappointing, but it was not a red flag when the Mountain was recast. In a production involving dozens and dozens of main characters and a principal cast this large, changes are inevitable. I really dislike overreaction to news like this.
